Manilkara and Smedmore (Thursday 12 September 2019)

As we needed to check on any progress with the Dovyalis lucida trees at Manilkara Meander, that was our first destination for the morning. While the Dovyalis proved to have no sign of flowering there were still several other plants in flower: Gerbera natalensis, Othonna natalensis, Ursinia tenuiloba, Erianthemum dregei, Acridocarpus natalensis, Salacia gerrardii, Leucadendron spissifolium subsp. oribinum and a very floriferous Asparagus. The Petopentia natalensis were at their peak, displaying their flowers at the tops of shrubs and trees.

After checking the Dovyalis we made a quick circuit around this grassland and its cliff edges before heading over to Smedmore to have lunch and see more flowers.

In the forest where we sat enjoying lunch, Gail found some Scadoxus membranaceus plants in fruit. We left the forest and headed to the grassland. We were soon amongst the flowers, finding Ledebouria ovatifolia and Eriospermum mackenii. Not far from these were a few Euphorbia bupleurifolia, several of which were in a very attractive state of flowering.

Once over the brow of the hill we found the first of the Anemone caffra flowers of this season. Some new buds of bracken fern Pteridium acquilinum made interesting shapes. We made a circuit of the grassland, ending up near the forest margin where we found Geranium flanaganii and Burchellia bubalina in flower.
