    Global description
     
    Erigeron canadensis is an annual erect herbaceous plant, sparsely or not branched, reaching 1.50 m high. The stem is ribbed, sub-glabrous or with sparse hairs. The leaves are simple, alternate, sessile, linear to narrowly lanceolate, of very variable size, 2 to 9 cm long and 0.2 to more than 0.5 cm wide, acute apex, attenuated at the base. The inflorescence is a large pyramidal panicle, terminal, often of almost half the height of the plant, with numerous ascending branches from the upper leaf axils. The capitulums are small, cylindrical, 3 to 5 mm long. The fruits are oblong achenes, about 1 mm long, produced in large numbers and provided with a pappus made of a single set of numerous whitish bristles, 2.5 to 3 mm long.
     
    Cotyledons
     
    The cotyledons are tiny, 2 to 3 mm long and 1.5 to 2 mm wide, glabrous, rapidly deciduous. Lamina is rounded, shortly petiolate (1 mm).
     
    First leaves
     
    The first leaves are alternate, simple, entire, arranged in a rosette, pseudo stalked. Lamina is first rounded then narrowly elliptical.
     
    General habit

    Annual erect herb, with little or no branch, reaching up to 1.50 m high.

    Cylindrical stem, full, ribbed, sub glabrous or with sparse hairs.
     
    Leaf

    Leaves simple, alternate, sessile, linear to narrowly lanceolate, of very variable size, 2 to 9 cm long and 0.2 to 0.5 to 1.2 cm wide. The larger leaves are at mid-height of the stem. Blade with acute apex and attenuated base extending in pseudo petiole. Margin entire or provided with some short tine and having sparse hairs.
     
    Inflorescence

    Inflorescence consists of a large narrowly pyramidal, terminal panicle, often almost half the height of the plant, with many ascending branches from the axils of upper leaves; Peduncles more or less filiform, about 1.5 cm long, hairy, with linear bracts, 1 to 4 mm long. Cylindrical capitulum, 3 to 5 mm long, white in color. Bracts of involucre in 3 to 4 series, linear-lanceolate, acute, glabrous or with sparse hairs, membranous margin, the external 1 to 1.5 mm long, the internal 3 to 4 mm long; Flat naked receptacle.
     
    Flower

    External female flowers in several series (about 50 florets); narrow cylindrical corolla, ligulate, 2.5 to 3 mm long, white to lilac; ligule 0.5 to 1 mm, narrowly oblong, entire; internal bisexual flowers are less numerous, narrowly tubular,  2.5 to 3 mm long, 4 to 5 lobed, yellowish.
     
    Fruit

    The fruit is an oblong achene, 0.7 to 1 mm long, compressed, sparsely puberulous; pappus formed from only one series of numerous white bristles, 2.5 to 3 mm long.

            Erigeron canadensis can be confused with Erigeron sumatrensis; the latter is distinguished by its larger size reaching 2 m in height and the size and color of the leaves and flower heads: long lanceolate leaves of 3 to 14 cm irregularly lobed or toothed, grayish; ovoid flower heads of 5 to 8 mm by 4 mm, densely pubescent and cream-colored.

                Ecology

                Algeria: Erigeron canadensis is a fairly common species in annual (especially vegetables) and perennial (especially citrus) crops in the north of the country. The species is also found along the banks of wadis and irrigation canals, in gardens and ruderal habitats, developing on all types of soils provided that they are rich enough in nitrogen.
                China: Erigeron canadensis is a common weed in open areas, along field margins, roadsides and dry riverbeds, at altitudes of 0 to 3000 m.

                Madagascar: E. canadensis grows on any type of unflooded, moderately fertile soil on sunny land in semi-intensive croping systems and pastures. It is a cosmopolitan weed that is increasingly frequent, especially in the city and in the suburbs, on the edges of roads and railways, in the regions of Madagascar with sub humid and humid climate.
                Mauritius: Weed of crops or ruderal on the roadside, in wasteland. It has been found in all the agro-climatic zones of Mauritius.
                Morocco: Erigeron canadensis is a common, naturalized exotic species. It is a ruderal of pastures, rubble and damp wasteland in anthropized environments, on sandy soil and degraded wadi beds, up to 1500 m altitude.
                Reunion: A species native to temperate regions, present above 400 m altitude (upper part of Trois Bassin, Cilaos, River of ramparts) as a ruderal species and in crops.
                West Indies: Erigeron canadensis is a ruderal species. It is sometimes abundant at the back of sandy beaches. Present from 0 to 700 m altitude.

                    Local harmfulness

                    Algeria: Erigeron canadensis is a minor weed. It is infrequent and not very abundant, and is generally not a hindrance to cultivation. The impact of this species on natural environments is almost nil because it only colonizes naturally disturbed habitats such as the banks of wadis.
                    Comoros: Absent.
                    Madagascar: Erigeron canadensis is a low-frequency weed in crops with an equally low abundance. This weed mainly infests wasteland, roadsides, fallows and pastures in periurban areas and in densely populated parts of the Central Highlands. The fight against this weed does not present any particular difficulties; from a certain density it can lead to the degradation of pastures.
                    Mauritius: It can have medium to high harmfulness in young sugar canes and other crops when it is abundant.
                    Reunion: Common but infrequent weed of sugar cane in the Western Highlands. It is also found in vegtable crops in Cilaos.

                      Medicinal: Erigeron canadensis has balsamic, antirheumatismal, diuretic properties. The flowery aerial part has diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also used in the treatment of hemorrhoids.
