Global description
Fuirena umbellata is a vivacious erect plant, measuring 0.5 to 1.5 m high. It is a plant with short rhizomes and sturdy stems that are pentagonal in section. The leaves are short, wide and rigid, with prominent veins. Inflorescences are arranged upwardly on the stem of a height of up to 30 cm. The oblong oval spikelets are grouped in heads. The fruit is an achene of ellipsoidal to obovoid shape, of triquetra section.
General habit
Robust vivacious erect plant. It reaches 1, 50 m high.
Underground system
The underground system consists of short large rhizomes that emit fibrous roots. The roots also emerge from the lower nodes.
Culm
The culms and leaf sheaths have 4 to 5 distinct thickened angles. The culm measure 50 cm to 1.50 m high and 6 to 9 mm in diameter at the base. The sheaths are shorter than the inter-node. The lowest inter-node of flowering culms are often swollen.
Leaf
The leaves have 5 prominent veins. They are obovate lanceolate. At the base of the blade is a membranous ciliated ligule. The lamina measure up to 7 cm long and 11 mm wide. They are rigid, much shorter than the stems, those of the base being very short.
Inflorescence
The inflorescence is elongated. It reaches 30 cm long. It consists of a terminal part and of axillary staggered portions. These inflorescences are under the axil of a leaf bract that are of the same size or that exceed them. The spikelets are grouped in dense bundles.
Spikelet
Spikelets are ovoid oblong, more or less rough to the touch. They are 4 to 12 mm long and 2.5 to 3 mm in diameter. They are brown to green. The glumes are oval to obovate, with rounded apex, pubescent and provided with a curved edge. The flower is surrounded by three scales of the size of the ovary. It consists of three stamens and an ovary surmounted by a trifid style.
Fruit
The fruit is an achene of ellipsoidal to obovoid shape, of triquetra section, with base narrowed into peduncle and apex in beak shape. It measures 1 to 1.25 mm long and 0.6 to 0.7 mm in diameter. Bristles are usually absent, rarely present and in this case shorter than the achene.

At Madagascar, Fuirena umbellata bears the same name as F. ciliaris "Vendranamalona" and can be easily confused with this species. It is a sedge of marshy areas distinguished by its larger size, its relatively robust pentagon stem with sub winged and its inflorescence more developed with partial quite numerous and distant inflorescences. It is a weed of rice fields that less widespread than F. ciliaris. It is found mainly in the plain of Lake Alaotra and in lowlands of rice fields of eastern slope, often with more or less peaty soil, where it is a fairly common species with low to average abundance.
