Global description
Ludwigia erecta is an annual, erect, herbaceous plant, reaching up to 1.5 m high, sometimes woody at the base, highly branched, completely glabrous. The leaves are alternate, simple, petiole measures 1.5 cm long without stipules. The lamina is lanceolate or elliptical, cuneate at base, acute to acuminate at the apex, pale green or reddish in color, more or less large on the main stem, gradually becoming narrower and smaller on the twigs. The flowers are solitary in the axils of upper leaves or sometimes arranged by 3-5 on leafless twigs and simulating a spike or a cluster, sessile or subsessile. They are yellow with four petals. The fruit is tetragonal.
General habit
Erect annual herbaceous plant, 0.50 to 1.5 m high, sometimes woody at the base, highly branched, glabrous.
Underground system
Taproot
Stem
The stem is cylindrical at the base, becoming angular in the upper part but not winged, hollow, glabrous. It is highly branched.
Leaf
Leaves alternate, simple; no stipules, petiole reaching up to 1.5 cm long; blade lanceolate to elliptical, 2 to 13 cm long and 1 to 3.5 cm wide, cuneate at the base, acute to acuminate at apex, pale green or reddish, bigger on the main stem, gradually becoming narrower and smaller on twigs; the upper leaves are lanceolate-linear to linear, 2 to 3.5 cm long and 4 to 6 mm wide, all more attenuated towards the apex than to the petiole.
Inflorescence
Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils or sometimes arranged by 3 to 5 on leafless twigs and thus simulating a spike or a cluster.
Flower
Sessile or sub-sessile flowers; bisexual, regular 4-merous; closely deltoids sepals, 4 x 1.25 to 1.5 mm at the base, acute and with 3 visible ribs; petals oblong or obovate-oblong, 5 to 6 mm by 3 to 4 mm, golden yellow; 8 stamens unequal, the opposite of the sepals are longer by one third than the other 4; disc slightly projecting bead; ovary inferior, lengthily cylindrical, 4-celled, style shorter (1 mm) than the globular stigma, 1.5 mm.
Fruit
The fruit is an elongated capsule, 1.4 to 2 cm long and 3-4 mm wide, tetragonal, topped by persistent sepals, irregularly dehiscent, containing numerous seeds.
Seed
Naked seeds (without float), ovoid, slightly arcuate, 0.3 to 0.5 mm long and 0.2 to 0.3 mm, pale brown.

French Guiana: Ludwigia erecta is a very common species in wet or temporarily flooded pastures.
Madagascar: Ludwigia erecta grows on fairly rich soil of lowlands and alluvial plains, alluvial clay loam, slightly or temporarily inundated hydromorphic soils, humus ferruginous soil with temporary hydromorphic. L. erecta grows on the banks of rivers and canals, on the dikes of rice paddies and other humid places, on moist wasteland. It is a weed of rice fields more or less extensive, without water control. It is present in the plains and wet lowlands all the climatic areas of Madagascar, up to 1200 m altitude.
Mauritius: Absent.
Nicaragua: Ludwigia erecta is a common species, often in muddy areas throughout the country, up to 1200 m altitude.
Reunion: It was collected once (Saint Pierre canal) in 1875, not found since.
West Indies: Ludwigia erecta is a heliophilous, semi-aquatic species that grows in ponds, ditches and puddles up to 450 m altitude.

Local harmfulness
French Guiana: Ludwigia erecta is a very common weed in wet or temporarily flooded pastures. It is present in 45% of the pastoral plots with a cover index that can locally reach 40%.
Madagascar: Ludwigia erecta is a weed characteristic of humid regions up to 1200 m, but often scarce. It is relatively abundant in random irrigation rice farming in the plain of Lake Alaotra.
Mauritius: Absent.
Reunion: It was collected once (Saint Pierre canal) in 1875, not found since.
