    Description
    Global description

Rhynchosia minima is a perennial herbaceous plant with slender stem, creeping or climbing. Leaves, stipulated, are composed of three rhombic-elliptical to subcircular, glabrous to pubescent leaflets. The papilionaceous, yellow flowers are grouped in axillary racemes. The fruit is a pubescent pod that contains two oblong-reniform seeds.

    General habit

Perennial herbaceous plant with slender stem, trailing or climbing.

    Underground system

    Taproot system

    Stem

The stem can be glabrous or hairy, with short or dense pubescence.

    Leaf

The leaves are composed trifoliate, alternate. They measure 2 to 7 cm long. The petiole base is framed by triangular oval stipules. Leaflets are hombic-elliptical to oval or sub circular, with rounded to acuminate apex and acute to obtuse triangular base, 8 to 60 mm long and 5 to 50 mm wide. The two sides are smooth to cover with shaved hairs, especially on the veins, dotted with conspicuous glands on the underside.

    Inflorescence

The inflorescence is a loose axillary raceme, 2 to 20 cm long.

    Flower

The papilionaceous flower is on the axil of a bract of 2 mm long. The pedicel measures 1 to 1.5 mm long. The calyx (4 to 9 mm long) is composed of a tube extended by 5 narrow lobes longer than it. The standard (5-10 mm long) is yellow, tinted or streaked with red

    Fruit

The oblong-elliptical pod, rounded at the tip, measuring 6 to 20 mm long and 3 to 5 mm wide. Its integument is covered with dense glandular pubescence. It contains 1-2 seeds.

    Seed

Seed, oblong-reniform, measures 2.5 to 3 mm long and 2.5 to 2 mm wide. It is brown or mottled.

Rhynchosia malacophylla differs from A. minimum by its larger leaves with leaflets 1 to 8 cm long, while A. minima has leaflets of 0.8 to 2.5 cm long. R. viscosa differs from these species by the presence of glandular and viscous yellow hairs on the stem, calyx and fruit.

It is also possible to distinguish these three species by the hairiness of the fruit

Rhynchosia viscosa has a hairy pod with long, stiff, yellow hairs tuberculate at the base and often glandular and sticky.
Rhynchosia malacophylla has pods with short, white puberulous hairs.
Rhynchosia minima has pods with long, white, tubercular hairs, non-viscous.
