Spermacoce verticillata is an erect or semi prostrate plant, with lignified base, 30 to 80 cm high. The stems are quadrangular, highly branched and shortly hairy. The leaves are opposite or in false whorls, sessile or subsessile with elliptical blade and scabrous margin. The flowers are white or pale yellow, sometimes tinged with red, 2 to 3 mm long, assembled in globular glomerules 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter. The fruits are small oval or oblong capsules.
Cotyledons
Cotyledons subsessile, oblong elliptical blade, semi fleshy.
First leaves
First leaves simple, opposite, decussate, sessile, elliptical to lanceolate blade. The margin is entire, slightly scabrous, the depressed central vein is visible on the upper side. The faces are glabrous.
General habit
Bushy perennial herb, extensively branched from the base, erect, 30 to 80 cm high, lignified at the base.
Underground system
Big taproot.
Stem
Quadrangular stem, solid, abundantly branched from the base, erect or semi prostrate, covered with short, abundant hairs.
Leaf
Leaves simple, opposite, decussate, but appearing whorled by the presence of undeveloped axillary shoots leaves. The leaves are sessile to sub sessile. At the base is a stipular collar joining the two opposite leaves, 2 mm long, with bristles of 1.5 mm long. The lamina is linear lanceolate, 10 to 45 mm long and 1.5 to 5 mm wide, acute to acuminate at the apex, narrowed in corner at the base or attenuated into false petiole. The margin is entire and scabrous. The surfaces are glabrous except the very prominent scabrous midrib on the underside.
Inflorescence
Inflorescences in spherical axillary glomeruli, 0.7 to 1.4 cm in diameter, with apical and subapical nodes, subtended by short leaves reflected downwardly, comprising of a large number of small tuberculate flowers.
Flower
The flower has a subcylindrical calyx, 1.25 mm long, topped with 2 lobes more or less ended in a point. White or pale yellow corolla, sometimes tinged with red, in long tube of 2 to 3 mm, ending with 4 small reflected lobes.
Fruit
The fruit is a glabrous capsule with 2 loculus, oblong, topped by the calyx lobes and carrying a dorsal appendage 1.7 to 2.4 mm long and 1.2 to 1.4 mm wide.
Seed
Narrowly oblong ellipsoid seed, 1.2 to 1.6 mm long and 0.3 to 0.6 mm wide, finely reticulated, blackish brown in colour.

French Guiana: Spermacoce verticillata is a very common plant along the pathways and channels of the Mana polder, as well as in the ruderal areas. It is also very common in degraded pastures and orchards with permanent grass cover.
Madagascar: Spermacoce verticillata is a weed of rainfed cultures, recently introduced in Madagascar, it is widespread in the Middle East and present in the depression of Alaotra - Mangoro (Middle East). It develops in rainfed crops on different soils (especially in old plots more or less degraded), in fallows and pastures. It is a species of middle and end of the cycle.
Mauritius: Common species in some localities of the island like the Plain Hièvre, along the road Brise fer, River La Chaux.
Reunion: Absent.
Seychelles: Absent.

French Guiana: Spermacoce verticillata is a very common in pastures, it is an excellent species indicative of degradation of the meadow. Having a high capacity of colonization, it can very quickly develop instead of the fodder species. It is considered one of the most problematic weeds of pastures as well as M. pudica. It is favored by long periods of regrowth between two grazing periods. It is also favored by large fluctuations in livestock load. High-load periods tend to degrade the canopy too much, favoring sprouting and weed development, while long low-load periods allow weeds such as S. verticillata to become lignified, rendering them unpalatable. It is also a major species of fruit crops with permanent grass cover. It is present in more than 50% of orchard fields, with an average index of abundance close to 4.
Madagascar: Spermacoce verticillata is a common and abundant weed in major crops (upland rice, maize, cassava).
Mauritius: A weed rare in cultivated fields.
Reunion: Absent.
Seychelles: Absent.
Burkina Faso: rare and scarce.
Ghana: rare but abundant when present.
Mali: rare and scarce.
Nigeria: rare and scarce.
Senegal: frequent and scarce.

Local control
French Guiana: In pasture, the best management of Spermacoce verticillata is to maintain a dense meadow with a strong livestock load over short periods and renewed very regularly. This practice allows during the load a high consumption of all the forage species and other more or less desirable species, a strong trampling of the weeds, without exhausting the reserves of the grass species. Thus the regeneration of grassland species during the period of withdrawal of livestock can be very fast and very competitive compared to weeds like S. verticillata. Cattle should be returned as soon as the meadow is reconstituted and as much as possible before S. verticillata fruiting. In orchards with permanent cover, the rotary grinding should be intense (cutting a few cm above the ground) and renewed before the new period of seed production of S. verticillata. In areas of very high density, impeding the regeneration of graminaceous species, the use of a hrbicide selective to grasses (specific to control woody broadleaf weeds such as trichlopyr) may be considered in young regrowth, some time after the rotary grinding.
