Global description
Ancylobothrys petersiana is a dicotyledonous plant with lianascent habit, measuring up to 6 m length. The young stems are pubescent with tendrils, the old ones become woody. The plant produces a milky white latex. The leaves are simple, opposite, with coriaceous blade, with pointed apex. The inflorescences are terminal, pubescent, in the shape of flowering tendril. The flowers are tubular at base ending in 5 oblong lobes, ciliated and white. The fruit is a globular orange-yellow berry of 5 cm in diameter, containing pulpy flesh and seeds (1-22 mm) ellipsoidal angular.

Mayotte: Ancylobotrhys petersiana is a indigenous species, common in xerophilous natural environments, especially on the points and the islets, in the padza and is also found in the open environments of the hygrophilous and mesophilous zones in particular on the crests and the roadside embankments. It is also a weed of food and fruit crops, more particularly in the south and the center of the island.

Origin
Ancylobothrys petersiana is native to central and eastern Africa and the islands of the southwest Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Comoros, Mayotte).
Worldwide distribution
This species was introduced in Mauritius.

Local harmfulness
Mayotte : Ancylobothrys petersiana is a rather frequent weed, present in 8% of cultivated plots, particularly present in food crops and fruit crops, especially in the south and center of the island.
