Microglossa pyrifolia can be confused with other bushy species with inflorescences in corymbs of whitish capitulum such as Chromolaena odorata (L.) R.M.King & H.Rob. and Ageratina adenophora (Spreng.) King & H.Rob.
The distinction of these three species can be made by the following characters:Hairiness of stem | Phylotaxie | lamina |
Hairiness of upper surface lamina |
Involucre capitulum | Bracts | Floret | Achene | Pappus | |
Microglossa pyrifolia | tuberculate hairs | alternate | ovale, green | Tuberculate hairs | 4-5 rows | persistent | ligulate and tuberculate | 1 mm | white or reddish bristles on 2 to 3 rows |
Chromolaena odorata | short haired | opposite | triangular with 1 -2 large tines at the base, yellowish green | scabrous | 5-6 rows | deciduous | 20 floret, all tuberculate | 4-5 mm | white bristles on 1 row |
Ageratina adenophora | white hairs or ferruginous glandular | opposite | elliptical to triangular, green with red petiole | glabrous | 2 rows | at least the base persistent | 40-50 floret all tuberculate | 1-2 mm | white bristles on 1 row |
