    Global description

Flemingia macrophylla is a shrub, reaching over 2 m high, with more or less ribbed branches, covered with a dense pubescence of appressed hairs. The leaves are alternate, compound, trifoliate, with oval-triangular stipules, deciduous; the leaflets are elliptic to closely ovate-oblong, 4 to 15 cm long and 2 to 8 cm wide, acute to acuminate at the top, having a pubescent underside, especially on veins and dotted with small yellow glands. The inflorescences are axillary, sub sessile racemes, dense, multiflora, 2 to 10 cm long. The papilionaceous type flowers, 7 to 10 mm long, have pink or purple corolla. The fruits are oblong-ellipsoid pods, 12 to 15 mm long containing spherical, black seeds, 3 to 3.5 mm in diameter.

          Ecology

Madagascar: Flemingia macrophylla grows on alluvial soils, ferralitic more or less humiferous soils, or of volcanic origin, rich enough, in sunny places or slightly shaded. It is a weed of more or less extensive cropping systems, including dry slash-and-burn and perennial crops (fruit) or in fallow fields, on the banks of crops and canals, embankments, the edges of paths and around dwellings in humid zones, up to 1200 m altitude, across the wet eastern slopes and highlands.
Mayotte: F. macrophylla is an exotic species naturalized in natural wetlands, such as freshwater resurgences and swamps, and in ditches.

              Local harmfulness

Madagascar: Flemingia macrophylla is a weed species, relatively infrequent and often sparsely abundant in crops. It does not present any particular difficulty except the size of the plant. This is a species introduced and naturalized in humid zones and sub-humid; it is well adapted on the slopes of the east coast and highlands and at medium altitude. F. macrophylla can be locally abundant along the edges of perennial crops on downslopes.

                Uses
Medicinal: Flemingia macrophylla is acknowledged as a medicinal plant but remains little known and little used in Madagascar.

Agronomy: F. macrophylla is a plant used in agro-forestry; it is used as a hedge to fight against soil erosion, as windbreak or plant shade for young coffee plants.

Madagascar: Flemingia macrophylla is controlled by means of small hand tools such as machetes or angady in cropping systems of rainfed rice in slash and burned and in  perennial cultivation or in fruit crops, conducted extensively.
