     Global description

Polygala paniculata is a small, upright, 30-60 cm herbaceous plant. Taproot smelling of camphor when it is torn off. Stem weak, glabrous at the base and covered with small glandular hairs visible at high magnification on the upper part of the stems. The plant ramifies moderately. Small, linear, single leaves alternate and petiolated (2 to 3 mm wide and 1.5 to 2 cm long). The blade, glabrous on both faces, the edge is smooth and slightly revolted. Only the central rib is visible. Small white flowers grouped at the end of terminal spikes of 3 to 7 cm long. The 3 mm pendent flower surrounds 4 petals including two larger ones framing a clearly visible light green gynoecium. The fruit is a two-part dehiscent capsule containing small black seeds covered by white hairs.

        Ecology
Fiji: Polygala paniculata is an abundant species up to 1100 m altitude, as a weed in gardens, sugar cane fields and wasteland, along roadsides, on dry hills, in thickets and on forest edges.
Hawaii: Presents and naturalized in dry or wet areas in disturbed environment, up to 1100 m altitude.
New Caledonia: Polygala paniculata is an ubiquitous plant, it grows on a large variety of soils, it is present on the soils of mining maquis. Very abundant where the soil has recently been reworked, it also occupies the middle of paths where the vegetation has not yet set up.
New Guinea: Presence in grassland, roadside, appearing as a weed in plantations (particularly at higher altitudes) when larger weeds have been controlled. Present up to 2000 m altitude.

New Caledonia: Polygala paniculata remains a minor invasive species of pastures but its ability to spread rapidly requires monitoring of this species.

              Local control

New Caledonia: The germination and spread of Polygala paniculata should be prevented as much as possible by maintaining a dense herbaceous cover. The insulated feet can be easily torn off by hand. On settled stands, the rotary crushing alone causes the regrowth of the plant and may contribute to its dispersion if it is made to fruiting. It will therefore be supplemented with a full-scale herbicide spray treatment on extended stands with grass-selective active ingredients (2,4-D, Triclopyr, or combining the two active ingredients).
