    Description
    Global description

Cyperus squarrosus is a small tufted sedge species with linear leaves with a broad V section and a bluish green color. The inflorescences are simple or compound umbels, whose rays bear at the end a head formed of numerous spikelets. The spikelets are formed of 8 to 12 glumes surmounted by a long apicule curved back. The fruit is an obovoid trigonal achene topped with a trifid style.

    First leaves

The first leaves are linear with a limb long acute, bluish green color. The limb section is V wide. The margin is entire. At the base, the sheaths are short and fit together tristically.

    General habit

Cyperus squarrosus is in small tuft from which develop many flowering axes. A tuft measures 8 to 20 cm
height and 10 to 20 cm in diameter.

    Underground system

The roots are fasciculate. They are simple, filiform and very numerous, of fibrous aspect.

    Stem

The stem corresponds to the floriferous axis. It is solid with triangular section at sharp angles, 1 to 2 mm wide. The faces are glabrous.

    Leaf

The leaves are linear, arranged tristically and are located at the base of the plant. They are 5 to 15 cm long and 3 to 5 mm wide. The summit of the limb is in cunate; the section is V-shaped wide. The margin is entire. At the base of the limb is a closed sheath of triangular section. Both sides are glabrous and bluish green.

    Inflorescence

The flowers are grouped in spikelets, themselves assembled by 10 to 25 in hemispherical heads at the end of the floriferous axis and at the end of the rays of the inflorescence. The inflorescence is a simple umbel, sometimes composed. It is subtended by 3 linear leafy bracts, of variable length.

    Spikelet

The spikelets are compressed, they are formed of 8 to 12 glumes weakly imbricated and arranged in 2 rows. The glumes are 1.2 mm long and have at the apex a curved back apicle, 1 mm long. The ovary is surmounted by a trifid style beyond the glumes. The inflorescence is golden yellow. The whole spikelet comes off at maturity.

    Fruit

The fruits are obovoid trigonal achenes with concave faces 1.3 mm long and 0.8 mm wide. They are surmounted by a trifid style. The tegument, light brown, is smooth.

      Life Cycle
Northern Cameroon: Cyperus squarrosus is a species of middle and especially of the end of the crop cycle. Germination occurs in July or August when rains are abundant and regular. The germination phase lasts 1 to 2 weeks. Flowering takes place in August and September for 2 to 3 weeks. The fructification occurs quickly and ends at the beginning of the dry season (early November) with the drying of the plant. This species has a short development cycle (4 to 10 weeks) characteristic of late-season plants.

Northern Cameroon: Cyperus squarrosus is a heliophilous species that grows especially in open places and in low cover crops. It grows on light soils, well drained, especially on ferruginous soils and sandy-loam alluvial soils. It is absent from very clay soils such as vertic soils. It is found mainly in plots cultivated for 5 to 10 years.
