The native range of this species is South Sudan to S. Africa. It is a tree and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Shrub (rarely subscandent) or tree, rarely up to 20 m. tall, trunk up to 50 cm. across; bark grey, peeling in rounded scales.
