The native range of this species is Ethiopia to Botswana. It is a perennial and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome. It is used as animal food, a poison and a medicine and has environmental uses.

Biogeografic region: Andean, Orinoquia, Pacific. Elevation range: 0–2000 m a.s.l. Naturalised in Colombia. Colombian departments: Antioquia, Cauca, Chocó, Cundinamarca, Huila, Meta, Quindío, Risaralda, Tolima, Valle del Cauca.
