Descriptions

Rubiaceae, D.M.Bridson & B.Verdcourt. Flora Zambesiaca 5:3. 2003

Morphology General Habit
Straggling to erect shrub or small tree 1.5–4.5 m tall; young shoots densely covered with pale brown shaggy hairs about 2 mm long; older shoots glabrescent or glabrous, often somewhat fissured.
Morphology Leaves
Leaf blades 5–15 × 2.5–6 cm, elliptic, oblong-elliptic or sometimes slightly elliptic-oblanceolate, acuminate at the apex, cuneate to almost rounded at the base, hispidly hairy to glabrescent above, densely rather velvety hairy beneath but leaf surface clearly visible under a lens; petiole 2–6 mm long, densely hairy like the stems; stipules 0.6–1.3 cm long, divided to near the base into 2 subulate attenuate lobes, pilose.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers
Flowers sweet-scented, mostly numerous in dense terminal cymose inflorescences; peduncle 1–2 cm long, secondary branches 0.5–1 cm long, pedicels very short, all densely hairy.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Inflorescences Bracts
Bracts filiform.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Calyx
Calyx tube turbinate, 2 mm long, densely hairy; lobes 5, leaf-like, 1.2 cm × 3–4.5 mm, including the claw 3–4.5 × 1 mm, pubescent.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Corolla
Corolla white with greenish tube; tube 2–3 cm long, slender, densely pale yellowish hairy at the throat and densely velvety hairy outside; lobes 4–5, 2.1–3.4(3.6) × 0.9–1.9(2.1) cm, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, caudate-acuminate at the apex, the tail being 4–5 mm long, hairy on midrib beneath and densely finely pubescent on both surfaces.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Androecium Stamens Anthers
Anthers situated slightly below the throat in short-styled flowers and about 5 mm below in long-styled flowers.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Flowers Gynoecium Stigma
Tips of stigma arms exserted about 2 mm in long-styled flowers but style only about 1 cm long in short-styled flowers, stigma arms 2–2.5 mm long.
Morphology Reproductive morphology Fruits
Fruit dry, indehiscent, 6–9 × 7.5–9 × 7–7.5 mm, oblong-globose or globose, compressed laterally, bristly pilose.
