The native range of this species is Nigeria to Cameroon, S. Ethiopia to S. Africa. It is a perennial or subshrub and grows primarily in the seasonally dry tropical biome.

Perennial herb, somewhat shrubby, 2.5–15 cm. tall, procumbent, much branched with branches 4-angled, reaching 35 cm. long, vegetative parts and calyx densely covered with short, stiff, patent, white hairs.
