Usually much-branched perennial shrubby herb, up to 1 m. high or more; stems succulent, older ones woody (?), reddish or green, pilose on younger parts, even glabrescent.

Leaves spirally arranged, petiolate; lamina (2·3) 3–10 × (1) 1·5–5 cm., ovate-oblong, ovate or narrowly to broadly elliptic, membranous, intense green on the upper, greyish-green on the lower surface, shortly pilose on both surfaces (more densely so on younger leaves) rarely glabrous, apex acute, usually acuminate, margin crenate-denticulate to serrate-denticulate and usually ciliate towards the base, base cuneate; petiole 0·7–2·5 cm. long, subcanaliculate, somewhat pilose (often densely so when young) or glabrous.

Flowers axillary, solitary or in pairs but only one fully developed at a time (as far as known), mauve, the lateral petals (always?) with a purplish blotch, the lateral sepals and the spur usually red; bracts very small, lanceolate-triangular, acute, densely pilose; pedicels up to 3 cm. long, slender, pilose or glabrescent.

Lateral sepals c. 7 × 2 mm., ovate-oblong, subacute, pilose on the margins; posterior sepal c. 3 × 7 mm., shallowly and obliquely navicular, abruptly constricted into the spur, distally acute, pilose (mainly towards the keel-line) or glabrescent; spur 23–28 mm. long, rather slender, tapering into a bluntish or slightly thickened end, incurved (often incurved in the upper half and straight in the lower one), usually pilose, rarely glabrescent.

Anterior petal up to 13 × 18 mm. (when flattened), apically retuse to emarginate, distally very narrowly cristate, the crest terminating in a subacute point, glabrous (as far as known); lateral united petals up to 25 mm. long, deeply 2-lobed, glabrous or somewhat hispid outside; anterior lobe c. 15 × 8–10 mm., transversely and broadly semi-elliptic to semi-circular, distally usually somewhat drawn out at the very base and forming a subacute point; posterior lobe c. 13 mm. broad and c. 10 mm. high, broadly ovate to semi-circular (see t. 26 fig. 10).
