Over the past decades the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) has continuously increased its focus on
the sustainable management of natural resources and landscape restoration in particular as
priority investment. The allocated resources are aimed at addressing persisting challenges such
as land degradation, subsequent fluctuation in production and insufficient non-farm employment
(Getu, 2012) . In light of the matter’s complexity, a number of different initiatives including
community based regular mobilizations (namely known as the mass labour mobilization),
programs and projects have been implemented all over the country since 1990s. Under the
management of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Natural Resource sector (NRS) takes up
the central role in steering the government’s works, providing coordination and oversight of the
sector’s policy development, program implementation and strategic planning and evaluation at
federal level. On the lower levels, this is operationalized by the regional Bureau of Agriculture
(BOA), Zonal and district Offices of Agriculture and Natural Resources that cascade all
respectively necessary support measures down till village / community level to support farmers
and pastoralists in their fields. Based on this linkage, Soil bund and plantation project were
implemented to restore the degraded land such as soil fertility and biodiversity improvement, job
creation, amend agricultural productivity and mitigation of climate change. Currently, MoA is
undertaken the NRM projects interventions impact study at micro-watershed level that has been
implemented in the past 15-20 year. This will help for planning of the next restoration activities.
Therefore, in every corner of the Ethiopia, soil and water conservation technologies such as soil
bund, plantation and area closure are implemented at site or grass root level as projects under the
coordination and support of Ministry of Agriculture.
