Aloe aculeata

This stemless aloe species is found in Zimbabwe and northern South Africa, and it is notable for the prickly surfaces of its leaves. The plant pictured is from Zimbabwe, as evidenced by the white bases of the leaf prickles, giving the plant a spotted look. The tall spire of flowers is typical for A. aculeata, but this individual has a much lighter flower color than usual. Most often, the buds are a red-orange or dusky red color, with the open flowers turning orange or yellow-orange. The yellow color of the flowers pictured imparts a “bunch of bananas” look.
