Description

Botanical Name: Wodyetia bifurcata
Common Name: Foxtail Palm
Growth Rate: Fast Leaves: arching leaflets canopy
Mature Canopy: foxtail palm has a canopy of 8-10 leaves with the characteristic of a foxtail or bottlebrush. Foxtail palm is thornless and has a slender, closely ringed bottle shaped to columnar trunk that grows up to 30 ft.
Fruit: colorful clusters of red to orange-red fruit, each containing just one seed.
Light Exposure: Part-Full Sun
Foliage: Variance of greenish colors; deep green to light green colors.
Trunk: the foxtail palm trunk is smooth, thin, and self-cleaning.
Container/Indoor Growing: The foxtail palm can also be grown indoors where it does well in brightly-lit areas. Makes a great container plant for patios, porches, or near swimming pools.
Soil Types: wide variety of well drained soils, including alkaline limestone soils and rocky sands
Moisture: The mature foxtail palm has a deep root stem that allows it to be quite drought tolerant. However, this palm responds well to regular, deep watering in well drained soils. During cooler months the foxtail palm needs only occasional watering. Care should be taken not to overwater foxtail palms that are grown in containers.
Fertilizing: Fertilize three to four times a year using a 12-4-12 analysis palm fertilizer: February/March, June, September, and November. If you fertilize only twice, do so in the spring and fall. Fall application is important to bring palms through possible cold. The spring application will supply nutrients for the new growth.
USDA Zones: 10 – 11.
Foxtail palm should be protected from frost or freezing temperatures.
