Lemon Grass is a thin-leafed, blue-green grass with a bright lemony fragrance that intensifies when the leaves are moved or crushed. Lemon grass is beautiful as an ornamental grass and useful as an herb. This edible grass is native to Sri Lanka and Southeast India, where they use the stems or tubules near the bottom of the leaves in soups, salads, and sauces and the leaves in herbal and medicinal teas.

This cascading grass grows in a clump, arching up and out from the center mound. Lemon grass is a compact grass, growing 24-36 inches tall and wide, and its leaves and stems can be harvested when it reaches at least 12 inches tall and half an inch across. Small pink buds cluster on thick stems in this grass, and the small flowers range in color from white and cream to pink or green. Its citrus fragrance attracts pollinators, and it is a great filler plant for any garden or border.

Lemon grass is related to the citronella family of grasses and is a natural insect repellant, warding away mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks with a clean, citrus aroma. The leaves can be crushed and rubbed directly on the skin as an insect repellant or boiled in water or mixed with essential oils to create a natural bug repellant to spray around the house and yard.

Lemon Grass is low maintenance and loves full sun, growing as a perennial in zones 9-11 and an annual in cooler climates. It can be kept indoors over winter in cooler climates to enjoy year after year. It grows well in containers, and if kept indoors over winter in any climate, it can be harvested year-round. Fertilize in early spring with our HICOTE 360 day slow release fertilizer for maximum growth and plant health.

It adapts well to most soil types but prefers loamy soils. It is resilient against heat but is sensitive to drought, preferring moist conditions. It also resists deer, pests, and most diseases. This compact, multipurpose grass grows quickly once established and is useful in any garden both for its beauty and functionality.
