Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty

  • Distribution: India, Myanmar and Sri Lanka
  • Description: Aromatic rhizomatous herbs. Leaves linear or linear-lanceolate, convolute, glaucous; sheaths to 30 cm long, keeled. Racemes to 14 cm long, whorled. Spikelets in pairs, dissimilar. Flowers yellowish-green or olive-green. Sessile spikelets 3-5 mm long, lanceolate. Palea oblong.

  • Properties & Uses: Roots are bitter, anthelmintic, stimulant, sweet, acrid, refrigerant, aromatic, depurative, digestive, carminative, stomachic, antiemetic, diuretic and febrifuge. Roots are used to treat burning sensation, ulcers, skin diseases, vomiting, dyspepsia, colic, anemia, cough, asthma, hiccough, bilious fever, gout, sprains, hysteria, and general debility.
