Wildflower series ~ Eriospermum flagelliforme, a.k.a. Eriospermum abyssinicum

There is one particular part of the hillside that is covered with these tiny little yellow flowers at the moment. I'm not sure why the population is so localised. The name Eriospermum means "wooly seeds" so I am sure that they are dispersed by the wind and so I would expect them to be more spread out than they are although most of the plants growing here seem to have specific patches where they grow. These seem to be able to grow on the hottest, driest parts of the hill.

These are caudiciform plants, meaning that they have a large round underground root. This is what the leaf looks like: they are easy to miss when they are not flowering because they look just like blades of grass, especially when they are growing in among grass clumps and you don't realise that they are even there until they start flowering.

Each plant produces a single flowering stem that has many branches with little yellow flowers at the tip and this is another spring plant that flowers before it makes leaves and the plants with leaves seem to be young plants that are not yet old enough to flower.

This made me smile, I think it’s just the idea that someone took the time to pay some attention to an unassuming little flower that grows in the wild when most would just walk by. I’m someone who likes seeing little daisies grow along the nature strip though and always want to take pictures of them. :)

The magic is found looking at things that you might otherwise miss

I liked this little, pretty flower!
It has a very beautiful and rich yellow color.

Yellow flowers are my favourite

What a gorgeous little yellow flower. It always amazes me how such delicate looking flowers grow in such harsh conditions.

They are certainly adapted to extreme conditions up here on the hill

Any little flower must be a welcome sight in dry environments.

Spring is a great time for finding all these little things that will get swallowed up by the grass in the coming months

Wow amazing! ❤ looks so pretty, love the colors and lights. Great capture!
Love your photography style and nice angle. ❤👍

Thank you

It's amazing how these plants can grow almost on stones, and even in hot climates and without water. This is how nature adapts plants to survival.

They are amazing to me

Just saw this tiny and dainty flower! So beautiful even so like a fleck in the sky.
