The generic name is often spelled Cluytia in older publications[].
Clutia myricoides Jaub. & Spach is included here as a synonym of this species, as per the treatment in the 'African Plant Database'. However, some other publications treat it as a distinct species[].

General Information

Clutia lanceolata is a very variable plant. It can range in habit from an erect, large woody herb or shrub growing 1 - 4 metres tall, or can become a tree up to 8 metres tall.
The tree is sometimes harvested from the wild for local use, mainly as a source of medicines.

Known Hazards

Although we have seen no specific information for this species, there are reports that several species in this genus are highly toxic to grazing animals[].

Evergreen bushland; open deciduous woodland; margins of Juniperus forest; often along streams or in disturbed areas; kloof forest and grassland; at elevations from 2,000 - 3,250 metres, sometimes descending to 1,270 metres[].

Medicinal

A maceration of young twigs and leaves is drunk to treat diarrhoea. The leafy twigs are also used in fumigations to treat ophthalmia[].

A root decoction in milk is taken to treat colds and rheumatism[].
