Magnolia x soulangeana seeds (Saucer Magnolia)

Description

Prolific, vigorous flowering hybrid. Its cup & saucer shape and firm thick petals are inherited from its Magnolia denudata parent.  The bold pink/purple colour and smaller tree/shrub form it inherited from M. lilifora. The flowers are glorious with bold pink/purple on the outer with a translucent mat textured white on the inner surface.  When looking into the flower when the sun is shining, the purple hues filter through like artisan created stained glass. Absolutely exquisite.  A clear sweet lemon fragrance will make you loathe to leave the garden.

Its smaller multi-branched form is perfect for smaller gardens and you don’t have to tip-toe to enjoy its mid-spring blooms.  Thick mid green leaves cast cool summer shade.  Blooms at an early age.

How to germinate Magnolia soulangeana seeds: 

Stratifying seed. Never let magnolia seed dry out as this kills the embryo. Sow immediately 2 cm deep, keep moist, keep the pot outside to finish the cold stratification cycle of 120 days. Sunlight inhibits germination. Most seed will germinate in May with the remaining the following year. Newly emerging seedlings need indirect light/dappled shade at first then stronger light as they put down a larger root system. Protect from nibbling pests two years. If you baggie sow these provide room temps with no supplemental warmth as they don’t seem to tolerate this. Once you see them crack open, transplant into a pot 15 mm deep as they don’t like being in the bag when root is more than 2cm long and mortality can be high.
