Looking for a harvester ant species that doesn't get quite out of control as some of its cousins? The northern harvester ant, or Pogonomyrmex subdentatus might be the perfect pick for you.

This species isn't small. They're just the same size as ants like the western harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis, and have all of their bright red colorations. What sets them apart however, is how their colonies act. For starters, northern harvester ants are a whole lot less wild. They're quite notable for how sting adverse they are. Though they are still capable of stinging, they're much less likely to than their relatives. You'd really have to force them to. Colonies also don't get nearly as large as their relatives. Combine this with a great appetite, it's clear to see why many ant aficionados regard this species as a perfect small desktop colony.

Care for this species is simple as can be. A steady diet of seeds such as grass, poppy, or chia seeds, insects provided readily, the normal hydration setup, and heat around 85F will be more than enough. With proper care you should see alates in under a year.

All harvester colonies come with a seed bag big enough to last a month.
