About Mimulus aurantiacus (Sticky Monkey-flower)

This California native plant is called Mimulus aurantiacus. Compact in size and evergreen in nature, this flowering perennial subshrub features funnel like bright orange flowers with lacy edges that bloom from spring through summer seasons.  Just as the common name describes, Sticky Monkey-flower has 1.5-2.5 inch long by 0.5 inch wide sticky lanceolate leaves dark green in color. Reaching an average landscape size of 2-3 feet tall by 2-3 feet wide, this variety is drought tolerant once established and has been known to deter deer.

Planting and care instructions

Plant Mimulus aurantiacus in an area that receives full sun to light shade using a well draining soil. While this variety can tolerate full sun, it appreciates some light shade when planted in climates prone to extreme heat. A little bit of shade can also help prolong the life of its blooms. Water regularly after planting to help establish the plant, then reduce frequency except during periods of extreme heat.

Landscape design ideas

This easy care plant variety is a great option for landscapes with tight bare corners that need to be filled with a compact plant. It also looks nice when planted in flower beds grouped with colorful perennials for a variety of colors and textures. This plant is a great alternate color option for those who also like Mimulus bifidus White
