Hardcover. Condition: As New. "This detailed treatise is written for botanists, chemists and biologists as companion volume to "Glossary of Indian Medicinal Plants" by Chopra, Nayar and Chopra. It covers the onward period of 35 years from 1960 to 1994 spread over two ten year and three five-year volumes. "Volume 1 (1960-69) was published in February, 1990, Volume 2 (1970-80) in April, 1991 and Volume 3 (1980-84) in May, 1993. The reprint editions of these volumes have come out in 1993 and 1995. Thereafter, Volume 4 (1985-89) was published in July, 1995 and Volume 5 (1990-94) in August, 1998. "A uniform format followed in these volumes starts with an "Explanatory introduction" explaining the logistics of the write-up. The text on each plant also includes new type of data/information viz. chemical structures of new compounds and biological work on pure constituents isolated from a plant. "The volume 6 is the cumulative plant index. It contains names of all the plants, inclusive of synonyms listed in these volumes with page numbers. This would prove extremely handy to the readers to locate if and where the desired plant is described in these volumes. "In addition, it has been possible to compile an errata of volumes 1 to 4 which has been added on in this volume. Its incorporation by the readers in their respective volumes, would greatly minimize the risk of erroneous citation. "The consolidation of data of this just bygone 35 years period which has witnessed an unprecedented proliferation of data both in terms of quality and quantity in these volumes complete with cumulative index, will be welcomed by all those working on medicinal plants/natural products, who will appreciate that such a wealth of information has been assembled in classified manner.".

Fosberg. Appendix. Index. The use of plants for medicinal purposes date back a long time ago and probably happened when primitive people noticed that animals like chimpanzees partake of certain plants when they got sick. It has been reported that even around some 3000 years B.P., human beings were aware of the medicinal properties of plants. A number of important modern pharmaceuticals have been derived from, or are plants used by indigenous people. Modern drugs like aspirin, atropine, ephedrine, digoxin, morphine, quinine, reserpine and tubocurarine are some examples, which were originally discovered through observations of traditional cure methods of indigenous peoples. Bangladesh has also a rich history of traditional medicinal practices (alternately known as alternative or complementary medicine). Besides the established systems of Ayurveda and Unani, traditional medicinal practitioners in Bangladesh (known variously as Kavirajes or Vaidyas) follow their own system, which can be termed as 'folk medicinal system'. Various tribes in Bangladesh also have their medicinal systems, which can be considered as variants of folk medicine. In folk or tribal medicine, each Kaviraj or tribal medicinal practitioner has his or her own unique formulations of medicinal plants based on partly his or her own experience, and partly on the basis of plants growing in his or her own vicinity. Documentation of medicinal plants is important not only to identify the medicinal plants of a country but also to initiate further research, which may lead to discovery of new drugs. Such discoveries are important because of the emergence of new diseases like Ebola or AIDS and because of the emergence of existing drug-resistant vectors. Bangladesh is lacking in this respect for there is not much data available on medicinal plants of the country and their uses. This volume and subsequent volumes will be an attempt to fill up this gap on folk and tribal medicinal practices and the medicinal plants used by the folk and tribal medicinal practitioners. It is expected that these volumes will fill the need of students, researchers, as well as any interested person who may wish to know more about the medicinal plants of Bangladesh. (jacket).

This unique compendium offers profiles of 500 key species with detailed taxonomic information. One of the leading features of this compilation is the special technique used in the illustrations, both colour and line, which aims to achieve authenticity of texture, colour and form. The book also lists the distribution and popular nomenclature in English, Sanskrit, Hindi, Malayalam and Tamil. The main texts present properties and uses in a format which cites ancient verse texts and ethnobotanical sources. This rare work, in five volumes, should be of special interest to practitioners of alternative medicine, students of Ayurveda, the research and industry associated with medical botany, pharmacologists, sociologists and medical herbalists.

Indian Medicinal Plants, based on a treatise prepared by S. Raghunatha Iyer, a scholar of both Sanskrit and Ayurveda, aims to make an authoritative contribution to the field. The original work which drew upon classical texts and current research, as well as the oral medical knowledge of tribal groups has been updated by scholars associated with the Arya Vaidya Sala in Kottakal, India.
