Prunus laurocerasus 'Novita' - cherry laurel

“Novita” is a new sensation among cherry laurels. Eventually there is a hardy variety which has benefits of the formerly more tender ones: it grows fast and big, has large leaves of a nice colour, and of course if fully hardy! The leaves are 10-15 cm long, obovate, very glossy, soft green when young turning to deep green. It is a perfect specimen or a superb large hedging plant.

Flowers, if any, are fragrant erect panicles which produce poisonous glossy black berries in summer and autumn. It prefers a semi-shaded location but grows happily in full sun or shade provided the roots will remain in cool and moist soil. It likes deep soil which is acidic, permeable, rich in humus and always moist. In winter provide extra watering in frost-free periods.
