Evaluation of pasture is often suggested to improve the productive and reproductive performance of livestock and proper utilization of the grazing land. However, this has got little attention in western Ethiopia. Here, a study was conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of Hyparrhenia anamesa grass dominated natural pasture and its impacts on seminal traits of Horro rams, at Bako Agricultural, Technical and Vocational Education and Training College, west Ethiopia. One hectare of grazing land was demarcated and eighteen yearling Horro rams were allowed to graze for a grazing period of 120 days. The biomass yield of the grazing pasture was estimated using multistage systems where pastures were harvested from five quadrates (1 × 1 m size) from within the demarcated grazing land. Chemical composition of the pasture was analysed using standard laboratory procedures. Data on seminal attributes were taken every two weeks during the grazing period. The result showed that natural pasture w...

Effects of Agricultural Byproducts in Ration on Productive and Reproductive Performance of Saidi Rams2006 •
The influence of selected agricultural byproducts supplementation to feed rations on the ram's body gain, reproductive performance, and subsequent fertility were investigated. Forty Saidi rams were divided into 4 groups (n = 10). Group 1 (control) was fed 500 g/head/day concentrate feed mixtures (CFM) plus wheat straw ad libitum. Groups 2, 3 and 4 were fed 500 g/head/day CFM plus corn cobs or sugar cane tops or sugar cane bagasse (these roughages were treated with 1% urea), respectively. Serum testosterone, glucose and total cholesterol levels were determined and semen evaluations were carried out every 15 days. Testicular size, scrotal circumference and body weight were recorded each month. At the end of the experiment, 12 rams were allowed to mount 114 healthy ewes to evaluate the pregnancy rate for each group. The results have shown that the body weight, daily body gain, testicular size and scrotal circumference increased (p < 0.01) in the treated groups as compared to con...

Performance of Yankasa Rams Fed Andropogon gayanus (Gamba Grass) Hay Supplemented with Faidherbia albida (Acacia) Pods2013 •
A 91-day feeding trial was conducted to determine the effect of supplementing gamba grass ( Andropogon gayanus ) hay with acacia ( Faidherbia albida) pods on the performance of Yankasa rams. Twelve yankasa rams, aged between 6 – 8 months with average live weight of 17kg were subjected to four dietary treatments, each consisting of three replicates in a randomized complete block design. The four dietary treatments were T 1 (Gamba grass hay + 0% acacia pods), T 2 (Gambas grass hay + 10% acacia pods), T 3 (Gamba grass hay + 20% acacia pods) and T 4 (Gamba grass hay + 30% acacia pods). The result showed that rams fed T 1 recorded the least feed intake and weight again than T 2 , T 3 and T 4 which were supplemented with acacia pods. The live weight gain of Yankasa rams in the supplemented diets were not significantly (P<0.05) different. The water intake of the rams was not significantly (P<0.05) affected by the acacia pods supplementation. The nutrient digestibility was significa...
The effect of the Garcinia Kola Seed Meal (GKSM) on the spermatozoa attributes and scrotal characteristics of West African dwarf rams was assessed in a 16 week study. Twelve West Africa dwarf rams weighing between 12.50 and 13.80kg were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments in a completely randomized design. Rams were fed experimental diets for 16 weeks. The diets included; 0% GKSM, 2.5 % GKSM, 5.0% GKSM and 7.5% GKSM inclusion levels as treatments 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Each treatment had three replicates while semen was collected once from all replicates in the treatments using electro ejaculator and assessed for semen colour, semen pH, semen temperature, sperm concentration, mass activity, sperm motility and live sperm cells. The results showed that scrotal circumference ranged from 18.16 to 21.00cm and scrotal length from 8.60 to 10.30cm but did not differ significantly (p >0.05) across treatments. Sperm motility (80.00 – 84.16 %) and sperm volume (0.29 – 0.43 mL) were not significantly different (p >0.05). Rams on treatment I had the highest sperm concentration of 2.59 x 10. Despite the reproductive potential benefits of Garicinia kola, the inclusion of GKSM up to 7.5% in the diets of rams used in this study did not have any direct or adverse effects on the sperm motility, live sperm cells, sperm volume, and scrotal characteristics of West African dwarf rams. Abstract Introduction The efficiency of sperm production, libido and quality of sperm tends to remain uniform throughout the productive life of an animal but may be significantly altered by age, nutrition, environment health status, drugs and chemicals (Togun and Egbunike, 2006). Medicinal plants like are of great importance to the health of individuals and communities. It constitutes an effective source of both traditional and modern medicine. These plants have been shown to have genuine utility and about 80% of the rural population depends on them as primary healthcare (Adebisi, 2004). The vitamin E

Semen Quality of Garut Rams feed by Different Protein Sources and Their Implementation Potential in Small Farms of West JavaABSTRACT. Maggot Hermetia illucens (Maggot Black Soldier Fly, MBSF) is an alternative protein source besides soybean meal (SBM) which may be used as a feed for improving the quality of semen particularly in Garut rams to support prolific nature. The aims of this study were to analyzed and compare the impact of different protein sources in feed on semen quality of Garut rams, and to assess the prediction ability of Garut rams to serve ewe in small-scale breeders in West Java, Indonesia. This study was conducted using a completely randomized design with 3 treatments and 4 replications, consisted of Brachiaria humidicola (BH) grass and T1 (concentrate contains 20% of SBM), T2 (concentrate contains 10% of SBM and 10% of MBSF), and T3 (concentrate contains 20% of MBSF). The parameters measured were feed consumption, semen quality (macroscopic and microscopic characteristics), also a potential ability of rams to serve ewe. The results showed there were no significant effect on protein con...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of graded levels of dietary protein using cotton seed and palm kernel cakes on gonadal and extragonadal sperm reserves of Yankasa rams. A total of 15 rams aged 19.06 ± 2.4 months and weighing 19.4 ±1.6 kg with good body condition scores of 3.5 were divided into three treatment groups (A, B and C) according to the dietary protein level. Group A (n=5) received 10% crude protein level feed, group B (n=5) received 15% crude protein level feed, while group C (n=5) received 20% crude protein level feed. The rams were fed for a period of 12 weeks before the testicles were harvested. Gonadal reserves of rams fed 20%, was highest with values of 43.3 ± 3.9 (x10 6 /g) and 47.0 ± 2.5 (x10 6 /g). This was followed by rams fed 15% C. P. and 10% in decreasing order (28.0 ± 3.9 x10 6 /g, 37.7 ± 2.5 x10 6 /g and 20.7 ± 10.1 x10 6 /g and 36.0 ± 14.6 x10 6 /g). These differences were not statistically (P > 0.05) different. Rams fed 15% had the highe...

SUMMARY: Four adult sexually matured and clinically healthy West African Dwarf (WAD) rams aged between 24 and 30 months were used for the study. The rams were first used as control and later as experimental animals upon being orally dosed with Euphorbia hirta extract at 400mg/kg body weight for 14 days. Semen samples were collected from the rams a day after the administration of the plant extra and seven days after. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of Euphorbia hirta on the semen picture of WAD rams. There were significantly differences (P <0.05) in the semen picture as reflected in a reduction of sperm motility from 80 % to 47.5 % and live-dead ratio from 90.75 % to 32.5 % in the control and post-experimental stages of the study respectively. This indicates that the fertilization capacity and livability of spermatozoa were negatively affected. There were no significant differences in the values of body parameters measured across the stages of the study. T...
