Vaz • Typifications of names of taxa of Bauhinia TAXON 60 (5) • October 2011: 1464–1474 N O M E N C L AT U R E Edited by John McNeill & Anthony E. Orchard Typification of names of taxa of Bauhinia L. (Leguminosae : Cercideae) from Brazil Angela Maria Studart da Fonseca Vaz Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE); current address: Instituto de Pesquisas Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro, Rua Pacheco Leão, 915, CEP 22460-050, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; avaz@jbrj.gov.br Abstract An alphabetical list of all the validly published names of Brazilian taxa of Bauhinia L. s.str. (= Bauhinia subg. Bauhinia) including those first published in Pauletia Cav. is presented with details of all types including 30 new typifications. All names are assigned to their accepted taxa following the classification for Leguminosae tribe Cercideae published by Lewis & Forest in 2005. Keywords Bauhinia ; Brazil; infrageneric taxa; taxonomy; typification INTRODUCTION Wunderlin & al. (1987) proposed a reorganization of the tribe Cercideae of Leguminosae subfamily Caesalpinioideae into five genera (Cercis L., Adenolobus (Harv. ex Benth. & Hook. f.) Torre & Hill., Griffonia Baill., Brenierea Humbert, Bauhinia L.). They classified the genus Bauhinia into 4 subgenera, 22 sections, 12 new subsections, and 30 new series, with an estimate of about 300 species that were not listed. Wunderlin (1976) had previously listed and typified 33 validly published generic names referable to the tribe Cercideae. Lewis & Forest (2005) presented a new classification for tribe Cercideae. Their treatment differs in that Barklya F. Muell., Gigasiphon Drake, Lasiobema (Korth.) Miq., Lysiphyllum (Benth.) de Wit, Phanera Lour., Piliostigma Hochst. and Tylosema (Schweinf.) Torre & Hillc., treated as subdivisions of Bauhinia by Wunderlin & al. (1987), are considered distinct genera. A Bauhinia species monograph or checklist for the Neotropics is still needed. Three of the four subgenera of Bauhinia proposed by Wunderlin & al. (1987) occur in Brazil: (1) Bauhinia subg. Bauhinia (57 spp.) with B. sect. Bauhinia, B. sect. Amaria (S. Mutis) Endl., and B. sect. Pauletia (Cav.) DC.; (2) Bauhinia subg. Elayuna (Raf.) Wunderlin & al. (3 spp.) with only B. sect. Benthamia Fortunato & Wunderlin; and (3) Bauhinia subg. Phanera (Lour.) Wunderlin & al. (ca. 40 spp.) with B. sect. Caulotretus DC. and B. sect. Schnella (Raddi) Benth. Bauhinia sects. Bauhinia, Amaria, and Pauletia were included by Lewis & Forest (2005) in their newly circumscribed Bauhinia L. s.str., as they recognized B. subg. Phanera at generic rank and included the Neotropical taxa Schnella Raddi and Caulotretus Rich. ex Schott within it. The Neotropical B. sect. Benthamia was not mentioned. Bentham (1870) presented a treatment with 64 species of Bauhinia s.l. occurring at Brazil. In more recent times, Vaz (1979) published a taxonomic treatment covering 23 native 1464 Brazilian species of Bauhinia sect. Caulotretus and Vaz & Tozzi (2003a, b, 2005) published one that recognized 53 species of Bauhinia sect. Pauletia and Vaz & al. (2010) presented a key for the identification of Brazilian species of Bauhinia s.str. This paper presents a list of validly published names referring to taxa of Bauhinia sensu Lewis & Forest (2005) in alphabetical order of basionym and includes 24 new typifications. All validly published combinations under Bauhinia are also included in the alphabetical list with cross-reference to their basionyms, as are two under Pauletia which are not names of species with the same epithet as under Bauhinia. The accepted names, are presented in bold-italics and the synonyms in italics. TYPIFICATIONS Bauhinia acreana Harms in Notizbl. Königl. Bot. Gart. Berlin 6: 307. 1915 – Type: Bolivia, “Gebiet des Rio Acre, Cobija”, Ule 9441 (B, destroyed [photo in RB! ex F negative 1561]; lectotype, designated here, L!; isolectotype G [photo in RB!]). Bauhinia aculeata Vell., Fl. Flumin.: 171. 1829 (‘1825’) nom. illeg., non L., 1753, nec Cav., 1799 – Type: Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, “tum maritimis, tum mediterraneis”, in protologue (lectotype, designated here, [original icon in Biblioteca Nacional, Rio de Janeiro, of] Fl. Flumin. 4: tab. 83. 1831 (‘1827’)). [= Bauhinia forficata Link] The Flora Fluminensis manuscript was finished by Vellozo and presented by him to the Lisbon Court in 1790 (Borgmeier, 1937: 79) but the first part of the text was printed only in 1825 and distributed (and hence effectively published) in 1829, long after the author’s death in 1811 (Carauta, 1973; Stafleu & Cowan 1986; Lima, 1995). The original illustrations are kept at the National Library, Rio de Janeiro. Bauhinia aculeata was given the diagnosis “B. caule aculeato. (tab. 83ª T. 4)” by TAXON 60 (5) • October 2011: 1464–1474 Vellozo (1829) and this phrase is a reference to the original material preceding the description of the species, together with the type locality (stated above). The type material of Vellozo no longer exists. Brother Arrabida, the editor of the Icones (Vellozo, 1831), wrote in the preface that the illustrations were done by Vellozo, himself, so the original illustration of Bauhinia aculeata is original material for the name. There is no need to indicate an epitype as Vellozo’s figure of B. aculeata is elucidative of the flowers, fruit, and vegetative characters. This name is a later homonym of B. aculeata L., the name of a recognised Neotropical species that does not occur in Brazil. Bauhinia acuruana Moric., Pl. Nouv. Amer. 6: 77. 1840 ≡ Pauletia acuruana (Moric.) Schmitz in Bull. Jard. Bot. Natl. Belg. 43: 387. 1973 – Type: Brazil, Bahia, Serra Açuruá, Blanchet 2825 (holotype G; isotypes NY!, P!). Moricand’s herbarium is now part of the general herbarium at Geneva (G) (Stafleu & Cowan, 1981). Bauhinia acuruana var. nitida Benth. in Martius, Fl. Bras. 15(2): 187. 1870 – Type: Brazil, Minas Gerais, S. Romão, Gardner 4536 (lectotype, designated here, K, Herb. Hook. 1867 [photo in RB!]; isolectotype OXF!). Brazil, Minas Gerais, Claussen s.n. Belg. 43: 394. 1973 – Type locality: Brazil, “Native of Maranham”, “Gardner 6008” on a label (lectotype designated here, BM No. 535635! [photo in RB!]). Wunderlin annotated as lectotype of B. dubia the specimen at BM formally designated as such above. In publishing the name, Don wrote “B.? dubia”, being unsure as to its generic assignment. No collection data were provided beyond the statement “Native of Maranham” along with the field characters “Flowers white” and “Shrub 1 to 2 feet”. Don included in his description “leaves alternate, cordate, acuminated, glabrous and obsoletely 3-nerved” and these leaf characters are represented on the specimen designated here as lectotype. There are at least two sheets annotated as “6008, Bauhinia sp. a shrub 6 feet high—dry woods Maranham, june/41 [i.e., 1841]” and attributed to Gardner: one sheet is at Kew with fruits, and the other at BM [BM No. 535635] with flowers. The BM sheet corresponds closely with the description in the protologue that refers to flower characters but does not mention fruit. Bentham (1870) cited under Bauhinia dubia two collections from the same locality (“habitat”): “in sylvis siccis circa Maranhão: Gardner 6008, G. Don [s.n.]”. The specimens at BM and K do not belong to the same collection. According to Urban (1906), Gardner only went to Maraham in 1841, long after Don had published Bauhinia dubia (1832). Examining the sheet from BM that corresponds exactly to the original description, I prefer to choose this material as lectotype of Bauhinia dubia, rather than treating it as a neotype, because I believe it has been wrongly annotated as to collector. I am conviced that this collection is original material, and probably was made by George Don himself, who had been in Maranhão state, in 1822–1823 (Urban, 1906).
