Raphiolepis umbellata

Description

An evergreen large shrub with a dense, rounded habit. It flowers prolifically during Spring and Summer, producing masses of small, white, fragrant, blossoms that develop into small, blue berries. Leaves are rounded, almost blunt-tipped, thick and leathery. They are dark green and lustrous above while lighter and dull below, and may develop a purple hue in Winter. Likes a moist, well drained, enriched soil and withstands drought once established. Very tolerant of coastal conditions, salt-laden winds and humidity. Good as a feature plant, screening/hedging/windbreak or in pots. Minimal maintenance required but can be pruned to shape after flowering in Summer. Remove berries to encourage good flowering the following year.
