Wigandia
A spectacular summer-flowering plant primarily grown for its dramatic foliage and superb form, the large oval-shaped leaves are deep-green above and bronze underneath with a fine covering of tiny hairs which can inflict a mild sting. An outstanding addition to the rear of your garden, the bold foliage from 2-3.5m is topped with clusters of mauve flowers throughout summer. Originally from Central and South America, its tropical-look belies its hardiness, tolerating both extended periods of dry and frost once established. Suitable for coastal locations.
Hardy once established, Wigandia is prone to suckering, so remove unwanted growth annually. Always wear gloves, and protective clothing when pruning to avoid unwanted stings and skin irritation.
