Jewel millet is good for cutting and drying and works in nicely with flower arrangements. How To Grow Foxtail Millet From Ornamental Grass Seeds: Start ornamental millet seeds indoors in early spring. Cover the Setaria italica seeds lightly and keep them moist. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, separate them out and grow them individually in their own pot. Once frost danger has passed the Foxtail Millet grass can be transplanted outside. In areas with a long growing season, Jewel millet seeds can be started directly outdoors after frost danger has passed. However, with a later start, the seed heads may not mature completely in the early fall to attract wildlife. Ornamental millet grows best in a rich, well-drained soil, and it does not perform well in shade. Jewel millet will start out green and the color will begin to darken with maturity.
