Purple Dead-nettle (Lamium purpureum, Lamiaceae) is one of the first plants to flower in spring, sometimes even as early as January. Native to Eurasia, it has taken quite nicely to our fields, farms and cities. The leaves and flowers can be eaten sparingly in salads or as a garnish, or cooked in soups, stir-fries etc.

It is superficially similar to true Nettle (Urtica) in appearance but is not related and doesn't sting, hence the 'dead' in "Dead-Nettle."

Purple Dead-Nettle is an important early food source for hungry pollinators, purple dead nettle also self-pollinate, ensuring their reproduction regardless of whether they have bee visitors.

~ Germination instructions ~
First, soak to seeds for 24 hours to soften the outer seed coating. Purple Dead-Nettle seeds require cold stratification to coax the seeds out of dormancy. Cold stratification is achieved by scattering the seeds on the surface of the planting medium, barely covering them with a sprinkling of moist soil and placing them in the fridge for one month to six weeks. Containers are then moved to an area where the soil will remain between 45 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
