Encephalartos ngoyanus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Vulnerable.

CULTIVATION:

  • Full sun to semi shade.
  • Does well with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Tolerant to light frost.

PROPAGATION:

  • Rarely produce suckers and is readily propagated from seed.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • KwaZulu Natal Province near the Ngoye Forest as well as on both sides of the border with Swaziland in the vicinity of the Josini dam and towns of Mkuze and Ubombo.
  • Plants mainly grow in open veld between rocks.

STEM:

  • Subterranean erect stem.
  • Can attain a length of 30 cm and a diameter of 15 cm to 25 cm.
  • The stem is kept underground by contractile roots.

LEAVES:

  • Leaves are bright green to often a dark green on the upper side with a lighter green on the lower side.
  • Leaves are straight and often twist near the apex.
  • Leaflets don’t shield one another.
  • Leaflets of juvenile plants and may have 1 – 3 teeth on the lower margin but leaflets of mature plants have entire margins.
CONES:
  • Both sexes produce a solitary cone per stem that is initially light green with a more yellowish-green colour with maturity.
