Encephalartos senticosus

CONSERVATION STATUS:
  • Endangered.

CULTIVATION:

  • Semi shade to full sun.
  • Regular watering with good drainage.
  • Can sustain light frost.

PROPAGATION:

  • Grows fairly rapidly.
  • Readily propagated from seed and suckers.
NATURAL HABITAT:
  • KwaZulu Natal Province from the area around the Jozini dam into Swaziland to the Siteki area.
  • They grow on gentle slopes between rocks and on cliff faces.

STEM:

  • Erect, aerial stem that sometimes become reclining when long.
  • Stem can attain a length of up to 4 meters with a diameter of 25 cm to 40 cm.   

LEAVES:

  • Leaves are dark green on the upper side and lighter green on the lower side.
  • The leaves are stiff and 1 meter to 1.8 meters long.
  • Rachis is yellowish and leaflets shield one another more so to the leaf apex.
  • Both leaflet margins have teeth.
  • Leaflets are concave transversely on the upper side.
CONES:
  • Male cones have a yellow to yellow-orange colour.  Female cones have an apricot-yellow colour.
