USDA Plants National Database recognizes three subspecies of P. barbatus, all native to the southwestern portion of the U.S. Subspecies barbatus is native to Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Subspecies torreyi and trichander are both native to Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. Subspecies trichander is also native to Texas.
