Epiphyllum oxypetalum

Epiphyllum oxypetalum (DC.) Haw. Epiphyllum oxypetalum is a stout epiphytic or lithophytic, spineless cactus 3 meters long or more, much branched with aerial roots. This species has long been cultivated and has always been a great favourite on account of the ease with which it is grown and the abundance of large white flowers it furnishes. These begin to open in the early evening and are perfect about midnight. It is the most commonly grown of the Epiphyllum species. E. oxypetalum is closely related to Epiphyllum thomasianum and Epiphyllum pumilum, but quite distinct. It rarely blooms and only at night, and its flowers wilt before dawn. Though it is sometimes referred to as a night-blooming cereus, it is not closely related to any of the species in the tribe Cereeae, such as Selenicereus, that are more commonly known as night-blooming cereus.

The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words "έπί" for on and "φύλλον" for leaf, means on the leaf and refers to the origin of the flowers on the leaf-like shoots
