Jatropha multifida L. , also known as 'the coral tree', is a tree or shrub that is indigenous to Mexico, and the Caribbean, and its leaves feature elaborate, palmate, and lobed shapes.
This plant derives its common name from its inflorescence, which resembles vividly-colored, stony red corals.
The genus name is derived from the Greek words ἰατρός (iatros), meaning "physician", and τροφή (trophe), meaning "nutrition", hence the common name physic nut. Another common name is nettlespurge.
