Melaleuca hypericifolia is a shrub usually 2-3 m with long arching branchlets. It prefers damp soils in woodland on sandstone.

The soft flower spikes, 3-5cm long, hang down from old wood. They have bundles of red filaments which are adapted to pollination by birds.

The leaves of Melaleuca hypericifolia are evenly-spaced, opposite, lance-shaped, 13-40mm long and 4-10 mm wide. They are aromatic when crushed.

Melaleuca hypericifolia flowers from October to January.
