Commonly cultivated around the world, Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Blue Candle) is a shrubby or tree-like branching cactus resembling a candelabra with age. The thick stems, up to 4 in. across (10 cm), are bluish-green, each with 5-8 ribs. Along the stems are areoles that bear 5-9 black radial and central spines. In summer, showy greenish-white flowers are followed by dark red or blue, very sweet, oblong fruits. Despite the large stature of this cactus, the flowers, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), and fruits, 1 in. across (2.5 cm), are rather small. Blue Candle starts blooming when it is about 2 ft. tall (60 cm). Easy to grow, Blue Candle is reported to be cold-hardy down to 25°F (-4°C) for short periods. Adding long-lasting beauty to the landscape, this eye-catching columnar cactus is planted worldwide in tropical climate gardens. Myrtillocactus geometrizans is commonly used as a rootstock for grafting cacti.

  • Grows up to 10-15 ft. tall (300-450 cm) and 6-10 ft. wide (180-300 cm).
  • Easily grown in full sun in a well-drained soil with small gravel added to ensure good drainage. Appreciates light shade when young. Water regularly when in growth. Make sure you let the soil dry out between waterings. No water should ever be allowed to stand around the roots. Keep the plant rather dry and water only enough to keep the stems and branches from shriveling. Drought tolerant.
  • Great for desert gardens, rock gardens, succulent gardens or Mediterranean gardens.
  • If keeping as a potted plant, repot at least every other year in order to allow the proper room for growth.
  • Propagate by seed or stem cuttings during the summer months.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for mealybugs. Susceptible to fungal diseases if over-watered.
  • Native to Mexico.
