Cordylines for Easy Growing All Along the West Coast

Cordylines are versatile and easy to grow, and they thrive in our coastal California climates. Our wide selection of these plants represents the beautiful diversity of the genus. Read on to learn about some of our favorites!

Cordyline australis ‘Torbay Dazzler’

From a design point of view, Cordyline is an interesting genus to explore, because the looks of these plants vary so widely. Some, like the stunning variegated Cordyline australis ‘Torbay Dazzler’ pictured above, look almost like desert plants, which makes them a great companion for succulents. Others, like Cordyline stricta and Cordyline glauca, have a more tropical feel.

Cordyline stricta and Cordyline glauca make excellent screen plants, a good alternative to bamboo. Both bloom with sweet lilac-colored flowers.

Cordyline glauca produces lovely purple blooms in springtime.

The rare beauty Cordyline petiolaris (above right) resembles the plant commonly known as “Hawaiian ti plant” (Cordyline fruticosa), but is much more successful growing in coastal California. Its scarlet red fruits are truly dazzling.

We also grow several stunning red-leafed varieties, including Cordyline ‘Design-a-line Burgundy’ and Cordyline ‘Red Star.’

Cordyline australis and its cousin Cordyline australis ‘Torbay Dazzler’ are quite cold-hardy (down to 15 degrees F!) making them a great choice even for the Pacific Northwest.
