Hippo fig

Ficus trichopoda

Summary 5

Ficus trichopoda (swamp fig, Afrikaans: Moerasvy, Zulu: Umvubu) is a protected tree in South Africa.
Grows in standing water in swamp forests. Produces lateral roots which anchor and grow to become stems. In this way the tree expands outwards - and in extreme cases may form a multi-trunked tree of up to 100 m in diameter.
Leaves large, shiny on top and with a red vein on the underside. Young leaves are protected by a red leaf-sheath. Fruits about 2-3 cm in diameter.
