Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei)
Prized for crossing cold-hardiness with tropical style, the Windmill
Palm is fantastic for creating an island atmosphere, anywhere. Eventually
growing up to 15’ tall when grown in an outdoor landscape, or 5-6’ tall in a
large container, it’s topped by a gorgeous crown of large fan-shaped leaves.
This drought-tolerant, pest-resistant plant can withstand winter temperatures
down to 10° F. As leaves pass, simply cut them off; the toothy bases
of the old stems form the textured, geometric trunk. Plant in well-drained
soil and fertilize regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Cultivated since
ancient times in its native China, the Windmill Palm is now enjoyed around
the world since its royal appearance defines a landscape or provides an elegant
oasis within the home.
