Characteristics:

Habit

Upright large shrub, 3-5 m tall, 2-3 m wide, medium to fast-growing, cut hedge only becoming 2-3 m tall

Blossom

Cream-white, some 10 cm long panicles with pungent smell; June to July

Leaves

Semi-evergreen, oval, somewhat leathery and shiny, deciduous in unfavourable areas

Fruits

Pea-size, shiny black berries, turning colours in September, persistent; slightly poisonous

Demands

Sun to semi-shade, tolerates heat, needs warmth, sensitive to frost, for protected areas, otherwise not demanding, tolerant of urban pollution, tolerates wind

Soil

Well drained, chalky substrates are favourable; somewhat tolerant of salt
