Arundo Donax

Arundo Donax or Giant Reed, is a grass native to Southern and eastern Asia and Africa.

It is naturalized in Mediterranean Countries and some island in Pacific Ocean and Caribbean.

Arundo Donax can reach 6-8 mt high with stems of 2-3 mt diameter; leaves are gray and green , 60 cm long about.

The flower is an upright plume 60 cm high and appears in late Summer. Usually it has not seeds or has seeds rarely fertile. Infact reproduction of the plant is by fibrous underground rhizomes.

The plant is cultivated as an ornamental plants but it is used mostly to repair areas and to recreate the natural habit of an area. It is even used biofuel feedstock.

The plant prefers humid areas and so stands along rivers and wetlands.
