Description and Ethnobotany

Growth Form It is a large shrub or small tree, up to 4 m tall.
Foliage Its simple, stalked, alternately arranged leaves are ovate in shape, or occasionally lobed, about 15-25 cm long and 8-12 cm wide.
Flowers Its large, pendulous, trumpet shaped flowers are borne singly on short stalks. The corolla tube is 25-30 cm long, white or pale orange-pink in colour, narrowed at the base and gradually opening and flaring towards the end.
Fruit Its fruits are pendulous capsules that are up to 20 cm long and 2 cm wide.
Cultivation It can be propagated by cuttings or seeds.
Etymology Latin Brugmansia, after Sebald Justin Brugmans (1763-1819), a Dutch professor in natural history, Latin candida, shining white, referring to the colour of the flowers.
