Plants small shrubs, subshrubs, or herbs. Leaves usually dentate, sometimes entire, margins flat or revolute but notthickened. Inforescences thyrse-like, rather open; bracts similar to the leaves; cymes with 1-several flowers. Calyces 5-lobed, lobes subequal or forming 2 lips, upper lips 3-lobed, lower lips 2-lobed, (11-)13(-15-ribbed; corollas 2-lipped, tubes stright; upper lips almost flat, emarginate; lower lips 3-lobed; anthers usually divaricate,sometimes parallel; style branches almost equally long or lower branches distinctly longer. Nutlets narrowly ellpisoid, with a more or less distinct areol at the scar.
Clinopodium is analmost cosmopolitan genus with about 110 species. Only one species is know from Somaliland, Clinopodium abyssinicium. None are reported for Somalia in the Flora of Somalia.
