Found in Burundi, Cameroon, Rwanda, Sao Tome, Zaire, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Cape, Natal and Transaval Provinces of South Africa in humid upland forests on trees and on the rocks near streams at elevations of 700 to 2400 meters as a miniature sized, warm to cold growing epiphyte with a short to almost absent stem carrying a short fan of 2 ranked, linear to narrowly elliptic, unequally bilobed apically, basally twisted as to be all in one plane leaves that blooms in the late summer and fall on to several, 2 to 5 flowered, erect inflorescence that often arise from the same point year after year and carries flowers that may or may not be non-resupinate.

This species is separated from A pusillum and A chameanthus by the fact that it is a main trunk or twig epiphyte and has a horizontal inflorescence with up to 5 flowers, A pusillum is a main trunk epiphyte or lithophyte with an upright to 15 flowered inflorescence and A chamaenthus is always a twig epiphyte and has a minute inflorescence with up to 12 flowers. The other miniature that it can be confused with is Mystacidium flanaganii but it is always a twig epiphyte and has a pendant to 12 flowered inflorescence.
