Common Name Hallack's Satyrium [English orchid enthusiast in South Africa 1800's]

Flower Size .8" [2 cm]

Found in southwestern and southern Cape Province South Africa in moist and brackish soils near the shore at elevations of sealevel to 600 meters as a medium to large sized, cool cold growing terrestrial orchid with a leaf stem carrying 8 to 10, lowermost sheathing, next 2 to 4, broadly lanceolate, and the upper ascending and scaling down to bract-like leaves that blooms in the spring on an erect, 4 to 10" [10 to 25 cm] long, fairly densely many flowered inflorescence with linear, acute, recurved floral bracts and carrying non-resupinate flowers.

Found in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Swaziland, Natal and Transvaal states of South Africa at elevations of 600 to 2200 meters as a medium to large sized, warm to cold growing terrestrial with 4 to 6 cauline leaves grading into floral bracts above that blooms in the summer on a terminal, erect, 30 to 60 flowered inflorescence and carrying faintly scented flowers.

Differs from S hallackii in the shorter spur, bloom times and their geographical locations
